Photon Assurance was founded to help organisations unlock the benefits of laser technology without compromising safety, compliance, or performance.
Led by laser physicist and optical engineer Esa Jaatinen, Photon Assurance combines decades of experience in laser system design, optical engineering, laser safety, and applied photonics. Esa holds a PhD in Laser Physics from the Australian National University and has spent more than 30 years working at the forefront of laser technology across research, industry, consulting, and higher education.
His career began with eight years at CSIRO’s National Measurement Laboratory, where he developed laser-based measurement systems, stabilised laser frequency and wavelength standards, and precision interferometric solutions for government and industrial clients. This work supported Australia’s national measurement standards, earned him the prestigious Iizuka Prize for contributions to optical metrology in the Asia-Pacific region, and led to research fellowships with leading measurement institutes in France, Japan, and Taiwan. It also provided extensive experience with international standards, compliance, and organisational laser safety systems.
Over the following two decades at Queensland University of Technology, Esa led research into laser systems, optical sensing technologies, nonlinear optics, spectroscopy, and light-matter interactions while teaching and mentoring thousands of students and early-career researchers. His work contributed to the development of advanced sensing systems for industry, environmental monitoring, security applications, and hazard detection, while maintaining a strong focus on translating complex optical science into practical, real-world solutions. During this time, he also developed laser safety policies, systems, and procedures for the university, reinforcing his expertise in enterprise laser safety governance.
Photon Assurance was established to bring this unique combination of scientific expertise, practical engineering experience, and laser safety leadership directly to industry. The business specialises in helping organisations design, deploy, and operate laser systems that achieve their technical objectives while embedding robust safety frameworks and meeting the highest standards of safety and compliance.
